Important Ornaments: The Impact of Graphics and Rule Systems on Academic Wiki Use

Abstract

Collaborative websites, or wikis, are being used in the classroom to recruit user attention and to disseminate information [1). These wikis place a heavy emphasis on text, while generally neglecting graphics. Little to no research has examined the impact of this textual approach. This paper examines the use of graphics and rule systems as motivating tools in academic wikis. It reports the results of a 6 month long experiment involving 21 10th and 11th grade users to determine the impact of different rule systems and graphic packages on academic wiki use. Results indicate that graphics play an important part in fostering user motivation in collaborative websites. the new network and associated handsets, hardware and software.
