Learning Objects 2: Standards, Metadata, Repositories, and LCMS

Résumé

This book is the second in a four-volume series. It builds upon the first volume by taking an extended and in-depth look at theorists' and practitioners' efforts to consolidate current knowledge and praxis. This consolidation centers around conceptual and technological issues related to standards, metadata, repositories, and the concept of the LCMS (Learning Content Management System). Part I contains six chapters that focus upon LO concepts vis-à-vis architecture. A discussion of syntax, semantics, and LO metadata in Chapter 1 sets the stage for Chapter 2 which presents key issues related the applications of LO metadata. Chapter 3 reinforces and builds upon Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 by extending discussion of concept and issues pertaining to LO metadata; with a special emphasis upon semantics, content rules, and syntax. The chapters that comprise Part II (Chapters 7 through Chapter 11) complement Part I by dealing with pertinent issues and trends related to LO concepts and architecture. Chapter 7 and Chapter 9 deal with LO metadata and automatic processes and the future of LO metadata interoperability. Chapter 8 and Chapter 11 address the seminal issues germane to the design of LO repositories. Chapter 10 enriches the ma-terial presented in the other chapters in Part II by presenting an inclusive approach to LO architectures: portfolios and RDF. Readers will find all that eleven chapters of this book offer cogent, grounded, analysis of the challenges and opportunities posed by the complex interplay between LO standards, metadata, repositories, and LCMS. We understand that our authors have broached concepts that may generate serious disagreements. But in a fledgling field of inquiry such as LO, this diversity of opinion is a source of creative energy. It motivates scholars and practitioners to continue to push the boundaries of LO theory and praxis. Consequently, this book is presented in that spirit while providing a look at what is possible in the field of LO today. (http://informingscience.org/buy/product_info.php?products_id=48)
